Evidence supporting the use of: Fibroblast growth factors
For the body system: Muscles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Fibroblast Growth Factors (FGFs) are a family of proteins involved in a variety of biological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and tissue repair. In the context of the muscular system, FGFs—especially FGF-2 (basic FGF)—have been shown in experimental studies to play a role in muscle regeneration and repair. FGFs promote the proliferation of satellite cells, which are essential for skeletal muscle growth and repair following injury. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that exogenous administration of FGFs can enhance the regeneration of damaged muscle tissue in animal models by stimulating angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) and myogenesis (formation of new muscle fibers). However, the translation of these findings into clinical practice for muscle disorders or injuries in humans remains in early stages, and there are currently no widely approved FGF-based therapies specifically for muscle support in humans. While there is a scientific rationale, especially supported by in vitro and animal research, more evidence from human clinical trials is needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Therefore, the use of FGFs to support the muscle system is based on emerging scientific evidence rather than traditional use, but the overall evidence strength is moderate at this time.
