Evidence supporting the use of: Carnitine
For the body system: Muscles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Carnitine is an amino acid derivative involved in energy production, specifically in the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for beta-oxidation. Its use to support the muscles body system is based on its fundamental role in cellular energy metabolism, especially in tissues with high energy demands such as skeletal and cardiac muscle.
Several studies have examined the effects of carnitine supplementation on muscle function and exercise performance. In some populations—particularly individuals with certain metabolic disorders, carnitine deficiency, or older adults—supplementation has been shown to reduce muscle fatigue and improve exercise tolerance. However, in healthy adults and athletes, the evidence is mixed. A few studies suggest modest benefits in recovery from exercise-induced muscle soreness and attenuation of exercise-induced muscle damage, but effects on muscle strength and performance are inconsistent and often not statistically significant.
Overall, while there is a clear biological rationale and some clinical evidence for carnitine's role in muscle energy metabolism, the strength of evidence supporting its supplementation for general muscle health or performance in healthy individuals is limited. Most guidelines do not recommend carnitine supplementation for muscle support except in cases of deficiency or specific medical conditions.
