Agastache, commonly known as anise hyssop or huò xiāng (藿香) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for supporting the mucus membranes, particularly in the respiratory and digestive systems. In TCM, Agastache rugosa is often included in formulas intended to "transform dampness," alleviate nausea, and support the body's natural defenses against external pathogens that may affect the nose, throat, and sinuses. The plant is thought to promote the flow of qi, disperse wind, and clear dampness, indirectly benefiting the health and function of mucus membranes. Traditional indications include treatment of colds, coughs, and gastrointestinal complaints where excess mucus or "dampness" is a feature.
Despite its established traditional use, scientific evidence for Agastache's benefit specifically on mucus membranes is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial compounds in Agastache species, which might theoretically be beneficial for mucosal health, but these findings have not been robustly confirmed in human studies. Thus, the support for its use in this context remains primarily traditional, with a moderate historical reputation and only preliminary scientific investigation.
