Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Griffonia simplicifolia is a plant native to West and Central Africa, whose seeds are a rich natural source of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). 5-HTP is a direct precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation. Because of this, Griffonia seed extract is marketed and sometimes used as a supplement for mood support, including the management of mood swings. There is a biological rationale for its use: increased serotonin levels are linked to improved mood and emotional stability.

Scientific evidence supporting Griffonia or 5-HTP for mood swings is limited but present. Some small clinical studies and pilot trials have explored the effects of 5-HTP (not always specifically from Griffonia) on mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, reporting modest benefits. For example, some studies have found that 5-HTP supplementation can improve symptoms in mild to moderate depression, which may include mood instability. However, research specifically on mood swings (distinct from depression or anxiety) is sparse, and most studies are small, short-term, or have methodological limitations.

Overall, while the use of Griffonia for mood swings is justified by the plausible mechanism and some clinical evidence for 5-HTP’s mood effects, the quality and quantity of direct evidence are limited, and more robust research is needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
