L-carnosine is a naturally occurring dipeptide composed of beta-alanine and histidine, found in high concentrations in skeletal muscle and the brain. There is emerging scientific evidence suggesting L-carnosine may play a supportive role in mitochondrial function, but the quality and quantity of this evidence are modest.

Studies in cell cultures and animal models have indicated that L-carnosine possesses antioxidant properties capable of reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protecting mitochondrial membranes from oxidative damage. Some research also suggests that L-carnosine may help maintain mitochondrial integrity and function under stress conditions, potentially by chelating metal ions and preventing the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that can impair mitochondrial enzymes.

However, direct clinical research in humans on L-carnosine’s effects on mitochondrial health is limited. Most of the supportive data come from preclinical studies, and human studies tend to focus more on its cognitive and anti-aging effects rather than direct mitochondrial support. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for L-carnosine supporting mitochondrial function, this support is not yet robustly validated by large-scale clinical trials.

Overall, the use of L-carnosine for mitochondrial support is based on plausible mechanisms and preclinical evidence, but more research is needed to confirm its efficacy in humans.
