Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is used to support mitochondrial function based on scientific evidence. CoQ10 is a naturally occurring antioxidant present in the mitochondria of nearly every cell, where it plays a crucial role in the electron transport chain and the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell’s main energy currency. Several clinical and preclinical studies have shown that CoQ10 supplementation can improve mitochondrial function, particularly in individuals with CoQ10 deficiency, mitochondrial diseases, or certain neurodegenerative conditions. For example, research has demonstrated benefits in mitochondrial myopathies, with improvements in muscle strength and exercise tolerance. Moreover, CoQ10 levels are often lower in patients with heart failure, and supplementation has been associated with improved cardiac function and quality of life in some trials.

While the evidence is robust for mitochondrial and cellular energy support, especially in deficiency states, the effectiveness of CoQ10 in healthy individuals is less clear-cut. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and other regulatory bodies recognize its physiological role but are cautious about broad health claims. Overall, CoQ10’s use for supporting mitochondrial health is grounded in biochemistry and supported by clinical studies, meriting a strong evidence rating, though more large-scale randomized trials are warranted for certain conditions.
