Evidence supporting the use of: Magnesium Beta-Hydroxybutyrate
For the health condition: Migraine
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Magnesium Beta-Hydroxybutyrate (Mg BHB) is a compound that combines magnesium, an essential mineral, with beta-hydroxybutyrate, a ketone body. The use of magnesium supplementation for migraine prevention is supported by several clinical studies and is recommended in some clinical guidelines. Hypomagnesemia has been observed in migraine sufferers, and oral magnesium supplements have shown efficacy in reducing migraine frequency and severity in some randomized controlled trials. However, the specific form of magnesium—Beta-Hydroxybutyrate—has not been directly studied for migraine treatment. Most clinical evidence involves other forms, such as magnesium oxide or magnesium citrate.
Beta-hydroxybutyrate itself has been studied for neurological benefits, and there are emerging hypotheses about the role of ketone bodies in brain energetics and migraine, but robust clinical evidence for Mg BHB specifically is lacking. Its use for migraine is scientifically plausible due to the established role of magnesium, but direct studies on Mg BHB are absent. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and indirect support (mainly from magnesium studies), the evidence for Mg BHB itself is limited, meriting a modest evidence rating.
In summary, the use of magnesium for migraines is scientifically supported, but the use of magnesium beta-hydroxybutyrate specifically is based on extrapolation rather than direct evidence.
