Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Three-leaf akebia (Akebia trifoliata) is primarily used in traditional medicine, especially in Chinese and East Asian herbal practices, to support conditions like menstrual irregularity. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts describe akebia as a medicinal plant with properties that promote blood circulation, dispel blood stasis, and regulate menstruation. It is often included in herbal formulas prescribed for dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation) and irregular menstrual cycles, usually in combination with other herbs. Historical records such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and later materia medica reference its use for gynecological complaints.

However, scientific validation for these uses remains limited. Modern pharmacological studies have focused primarily on the anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and analgesic properties of akebia extracts, with few investigations specifically addressing menstrual irregularity. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest potential effects on smooth muscle relaxation, which might theoretically influence menstrual symptoms, but direct clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Systematic reviews and clinical trials evaluating akebia for menstrual health are either absent or inconclusive. Therefore, while its use for menstrual irregularity is well-documented in traditional practice, the scientific evidence supporting these applications is minimal and not definitive.
