Sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are well-documented for their roles in supporting brain health and cognitive function. Multiple observational studies and randomized controlled trials indicate that regular consumption of omega-3-rich fish, such as sardines, is associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline and may support memory and brain function. DHA, in particular, is a major structural component of brain tissue and is involved in synaptic plasticity, which is crucial for learning and memory processes.
A 2016 meta-analysis published in the journal Nutrition Reviews concluded that higher intake of fish and omega-3 fatty acids is associated with a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive impairment in older adults. Additionally, some randomized controlled trials have shown that supplementation with fish oil (which provides EPA and DHA) can improve certain aspects of cognitive performance, especially in individuals with mild cognitive impairment.
However, while the overall evidence is promising, results from intervention studies are mixed, and not all trials have demonstrated significant improvements in memory or cognitive function. Nonetheless, the traditional Mediterranean diet, which includes regular fish consumption, has consistently been linked to better brain health in epidemiological studies. Therefore, the use of sardines for supporting memory and brain function is justified by a moderate level of scientific evidence.
