Evidence supporting the use of: Fish protein
For the health condition: Memory and Brain Function
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Fish protein, particularly from fatty fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel, contains not only high-quality protein but also essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids (notably EPA and DHA), which have been extensively studied for their effects on brain health and cognitive function. Scientific research indicates that adequate intake of fish and fish-derived nutrients is associated with improved memory, slower cognitive decline, and a reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. While the most robust evidence supports the role of fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) for brain function, studies have shown that peptides derived from fish protein hydrolysates may also have neuroprotective and cognitive benefits, possibly due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that regular fish consumption or supplementation can benefit cognitive performance, particularly in older adults. However, it is important to note that the effects are more consistently attributed to the omega-3 fatty acids rather than the protein itself. Still, animal and in vitro studies suggest that certain bioactive peptides in fish protein may help modulate neurotransmitter activity and protect neurons from damage. Overall, fish protein is used with some scientific justification for supporting memory and brain function, but the evidence is moderate, and benefits are likely due to a combination of protein, omega-3s, and other micronutrients present in fish.
