Evidence supporting the use of: Gecko
For the body system: Male Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Gecko, particularly the species Gekko gecko (commonly called Tokay gecko), has a longstanding place in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other East Asian medical systems. It is reputed to invigorate kidney yang, which is traditionally associated with male reproductive health and vitality, including the treatment of impotence and other sexual dysfunctions. The gecko is often dried and used in combination with other herbs in decoctions or powders. Despite its historical use, there is a lack of robust scientific data to support these claims. Very few modern clinical studies have focused on gecko extracts for male reproductive system support, and those available are either limited to animal studies or are not of high methodological quality. The purported effects are largely rooted in the theoretical framework of TCM rather than evidence-based medicine. Therefore, while the use of gecko for male reproductive health is justified by tradition, scientific validation remains weak.
