Evidence supporting the use of: Spleen
For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
The use of spleen tissue or extracts to support the lymphatic system is primarily rooted in traditional practices, especially within the field of glandular therapy. Historically, practitioners of natural medicine and some alternative health modalities have believed that consuming animal organ tissues can support the corresponding organ or system in humans—a concept sometimes referred to as the "doctrine of signatures" or glandular therapy. In this context, bovine or porcine spleen extracts are used with the intention of supporting immune and lymphatic function, based on the spleen’s known physiological role in filtering blood and supporting immune responses.
Scientific evidence for this practice is limited. While the spleen is indeed a key lymphatic organ, responsible for filtering blood, recycling red blood cells, and mounting immune responses, there is little robust clinical research demonstrating that oral supplementation with spleen extracts has a measurable effect on human lymphatic or immune function. Most available data are anecdotal, or derive from animal studies and older, uncontrolled clinical observations. Some preliminary investigations suggest that certain peptides or nucleotides in spleen tissue may have immunomodulatory properties, but these findings have not been substantiated in large, well-controlled human trials. Therefore, the use of spleen supplements for lymphatic support is best described as traditional, with limited scientific backing.
