Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sheep's sorrel (Rumex acetosella) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in North American indigenous and folk remedies. It is an ingredient in the well-known Essiac tea, a formula promoted in the early 20th century for supporting general health and, more controversially, cancer care. Traditional herbalists have sometimes associated sheep's sorrel with "blood cleansing" and support for the lymphatic system, based largely on its perceived diuretic and mild detoxifying properties. However, there is very limited direct scientific evidence to support these claims, especially with regard to lymphatic health. Most modern research on sheep's sorrel has focused on its antioxidant content and its inclusion in polyherbal formulas rather than its isolated effects on the lymphatic system. In summary, while sheep's sorrel is traditionally used in herbal blends believed to support general detoxification, there is little to no robust clinical or scientific data validating its specific benefits for lymphatic function. Its use for this purpose is therefore best characterized as rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation.
