Ruscogenins are steroidal saponins found in Ruscus aculeatus (Butcher’s Broom), a plant long used in traditional European herbal medicine. The root of Butcher’s Broom has been historically employed to support venous and lymphatic health, particularly for conditions such as chronic venous insufficiency, hemorrhoids, and lymphedema. The traditional rationale is that ruscogenins possess vasoconstrictive and anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce swelling and improve lymphatic drainage.

Scientific research on ruscogenins is limited but provides some support for their effect on blood vessels, including improvement of venous tone and a reduction in capillary permeability. However, specific evidence regarding their direct action on the lymphatic system is sparse and largely extrapolated from their effects on the venous system.
