Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is a foundational herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it has been used for centuries to “strengthen Qi,” which is thought to enhance the body’s resistance to illness and support overall vitality. In TCM, astragalus is often recommended to support immune function and to address what is understood as “dampness” or “stagnation,” concepts sometimes associated with the lymphatic system in modern holistic frameworks. However, in traditional texts, direct references to the lymphatic system as understood by Western medicine are absent, as TCM did not anatomically identify the lymphatics. Instead, astragalus was used to tonify organs (notably the spleen and lung), which are indirectly linked to immune and fluid regulation.

Scientific research has validated some immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory properties of astragalus, but there is very limited direct evidence regarding its effect on the lymphatic system specifically. Most modern herbal traditions recommending astragalus for lymphatic support extrapolate from its general immune-boosting effects. Therefore, while astragalus is widely considered supportive in traditional systems and is sometimes mentioned in modern herbalism for lymphatic health, the evidence is rooted primarily in tradition rather than rigorous scientific validation for lymphatic function in particular.
