Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Alkoxyglycerols (AKGs), naturally occurring ether lipids found in high concentrations in shark liver oil and human milk, have been studied for their immunomodulatory properties. There is some scientific evidence indicating that AKGs can stimulate white blood cell production and enhance immune responses, which theoretically may benefit lymphatic function since the lymphatic system plays a crucial role in immune surveillance and lymphocyte trafficking. Some animal and in vitro studies have shown that AKGs can increase macrophage and granulocyte activity, and limited human data suggest possible enhancement of leukocyte counts post-chemotherapy. However, while these findings hint at an immunostimulatory potential, direct evidence for AKGs specifically supporting lymphatic structure or function in humans is sparse. Most studies focus on general immune enhancement rather than targeted lymphatic outcomes. Systematic reviews and rigorous clinical trials validating their use for lymphatic system support are lacking. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for their immunological effects, the strength of evidence specifically linking alkoxyglycerols to lymphatic health is weak and not yet robustly established.
