Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Spilanthes, also known as "toothache plant" or Spilanthes acmella, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in South America, Africa, and Asia. In these systems, Spilanthes has been used for a wide range of conditions, including oral health, infections, and as a general immune tonic. Its application for "swollen glands" or lymph nodes is based more on its traditional reputation as a remedy for infections and inflammation than on direct scientific validation. Folk medicine practitioners have used Spilanthes preparations to promote lymphatic drainage and reduce swelling, likely because of its perceived anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, while modern phytochemical studies have found Spilanthes to contain bioactive compounds such as spilanthol, flavonoids, and alkylamides, research has mainly focused on its analgesic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro or in animal models. There is little to no direct clinical evidence demonstrating its effectiveness specifically for treating swollen lymph nodes or lymphatic conditions in humans. Therefore, the use of Spilanthes for swollen lymph nodes is primarily supported by traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific studies.
