Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as reishi, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries. In TCM, lingzhi is considered a "superior herb," reputed for its immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. It is traditionally used to "support the body's vital energy (Qi)," enhance longevity, and assist in managing conditions characterized by immune disturbance or "toxic heat," which in TCM theory can underlie symptoms such as swollen lymph nodes or glands. Lingzhi is often included in formulations intended to "clear heat" and "resolve toxins," which practitioners may relate to conditions involving swelling or inflammation of lymph glands. However, scientific research specifically investigating lingzhi’s effects on swollen lymph nodes or glands is limited. Most modern studies focus on lingzhi’s general immunomodulatory effects, including stimulating certain white blood cells, enhancing cytokine production, and displaying anti-inflammatory actions. While these effects could theoretically support the body in resolving lymphatic swelling associated with infections or immune responses, there is no direct clinical evidence for lingzhi as a treatment for swollen lymph nodes. Thus, its use for this indication is primarily traditional, with only weak indirect support from laboratory research into its immune-enhancing properties. More targeted clinical studies would be needed to justify its use scientifically for swollen lymph nodes or glands.
