Lentinula edodes, commonly known as shiitake mushroom, has been used in traditional East Asian medicine for various health benefits, but its application for liver detoxification is more recently supported by emerging scientific studies. Preclinical research, primarily in animal models, has shown that extracts of shiitake mycelia can exert hepatoprotective effects. These effects may be attributed to the antioxidant properties of bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides (notably lentinan), eritadenine, and phenolic compounds found in the mycelia. Several studies have demonstrated that shiitake extracts can reduce markers of liver injury (e.g., alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase) and mitigate oxidative stress in chemically-induced models of liver damage. Some research suggests that shiitake may modulate phase I and II detoxification enzymes, potentially supporting the liver’s metabolic detoxification pathways.

However, human clinical trials directly examining shiitake mycelia for liver detoxification are limited, and much of the evidence remains preclinical. Traditional use of shiitake mushrooms for general wellness and immune support is well documented, but their specific use for liver detoxification is not a prominent theme in historical medical texts. Therefore, while there is some scientific basis—especially from animal and in vitro studies—the evidence is still preliminary, with a lack of high-quality human trials. More rigorous research is needed before strong clinical recommendations can be made for using Lentinula edodes mycelia in liver detoxification.
