Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Saccharomyces, most commonly Saccharomyces boulardii, is a probiotic yeast that has been studied for its potential to support gut health. Its use for "Leaky Gut Syndrome"—a popular, though somewhat controversial diagnosis referring to increased intestinal permeability—has some scientific basis, though evidence is relatively limited and still emerging. Several clinical studies have shown that S. boulardii can help maintain or restore intestinal barrier function in specific contexts, such as during antibiotic use, acute diarrhea, or inflammatory bowel diseases. For example, animal and in vitro studies suggest that S. boulardii may modulate tight junction proteins, reduce inflammation, and protect against damage to the intestinal lining. Some human studies have shown benefit in conditions related to increased gut permeability, such as Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome, although direct studies on "Leaky Gut Syndrome" as broadly defined are lacking. The evidence does not yet support routine use of Saccharomyces for this indication, but its beneficial effects on gut barrier function and immune modulation provide a plausible scientific rationale. Traditional use is not a major basis for this application; rather, its use is driven by emerging scientific research. The overall quality and quantity of evidence is moderate at best, justifying a score of 2 out of 5.
