Its primary action is as an osmotic laxative: when ingested orally, sodium phosphate draws water into the colon, increasing the water content and volume of stool, which stimulates peristalsis and promotes evacuation of the bowels. This effect is rapid and predictable, which is why sodium phosphate preparations have been widely used in medical settings for bowel preparation.
Numerous clinical studies and guidelines support the use of sodium phosphate for this purpose, with research demonstrating its effectiveness in clearing the colon to allow for optimal visualization during endoscopic procedures (source).
