Lactobacillus acidophilus is a probiotic bacterium commonly used to support the health of the large intestine (colon). There is substantial scientific evidence suggesting that supplementation with L. acidophilus can positively influence the gut microbiome, particularly in the colon, where it may help maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms. Multiple clinical trials and meta-analyses have shown that L. acidophilus can be effective in reducing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), alleviating some forms of diarrhea (including antibiotic-associated and infectious diarrhea), and improving bowel regularity. The mechanism is thought to involve competition with pathogenic bacteria, production of antimicrobial substances (such as lactic acid), and modulation of the immune response within the gut mucosa. Furthermore, L. acidophilus has been studied for its potential to prevent or reduce the severity of Clostridioides difficile infections, although results are mixed and often depend on the specific strain and dosage used.
