Flavonols are a subclass of flavonoids, polyphenolic compounds found abundantly in fruits, vegetables, tea, and other plant-based foods. There is growing scientific evidence supporting the beneficial effects of flavonols on the large intestine (colon), mainly due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic properties. Epidemiological studies suggest that a diet high in flavonol-rich foods is associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer and improvement in gut health. Flavonols such as quercetin, kaempferol, and myricetin have been shown in cell culture and animal studies to inhibit the proliferation of colon cancer cells, reduce inflammation in colitis models, and modulate the gut microbiota composition in ways that are considered beneficial for colon health.

However, the evidence is not unequivocal. While preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) consistently show positive effects, human clinical trials are fewer and often observational, making it difficult to establish causality. Some randomized controlled trials have indicated improvements in biomarkers of colon health after flavonol supplementation, but results remain inconsistent across studies. Overall, the current scientific evidence suggests a supportive, though not definitive, role for flavonols in maintaining colon health and potentially reducing disease risk, warranting a moderate evidence rating of 3 out of 5.
