Chicory fiber, also known as inulin, is a well-studied prebiotic fiber derived from the root of the chicory plant (Cichorium intybus). Its use in supporting large intestine (colon) health is primarily justified by modern scientific evidence. Inulin passes through the small intestine undigested and reaches the colon, where it serves as a fermentable substrate for beneficial gut bacteria, particularly Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that chicory inulin supplementation increases the abundance of these beneficial bacteria, enhancing overall gut microbiota composition and diversity (Slavin, 2013; Dewulf et al., 2013).
The fermentation of inulin in the colon produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate, acetate, and propionate, which have been shown to support colonocyte health, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the mucosal barrier (Roberfroid, 2007). SCFAs also play a role in regulating bowel movements and may help alleviate constipation (Micka et al., 2017). The FDA recognizes chicory inulin as a dietary fiber with prebiotic effects, and its regular consumption is associated with improved bowel regularity and possible protective effects against colon-related diseases.
While inulin has been used traditionally as a food ingredient, its primary justification for colon health is scientific, supported by randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews. Therefore, chicory fiber is a scientifically validated ingredient for promoting large intestine health.
