Bismuth subsalicylate is an over-the-counter medication best known as the active ingredient in products like Pepto-Bismol. Its use to support the large intestine (colon) is scientifically validated, primarily in the management of diarrhea, including that caused by infections or functional bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Bismuth subsalicylate works through several mechanisms: it has mild antimicrobial activity, it inhibits intestinal secretions, and it possesses anti-inflammatory properties due to its salicylate component. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing the frequency and duration of acute diarrhea in both adults and children. It is also used as part of combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication, which can indirectly benefit colonic health by addressing upper GI tract infections that may affect lower bowel function.
