Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Palm-Leaf Raspberry (likely referring to Rubus palmatus or related Rubus species) has been traditionally used in some systems of herbal medicine, particularly in East Asia, for various health concerns, including as a tonic for reproductive and urinary health. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), raspberry leaf and fruit are sometimes used to "tonify the kidneys," a term that in TCM encompasses a range of concepts including reproductive health, urinary function, and vitality. However, this use is grounded mostly in historical practice rather than scientific validation. There is very limited modern scientific research directly investigating the effects of Palm-Leaf Raspberry or raspberry leaf on kidney function or renal health in humans. The available studies on raspberry leaves focus more on their antioxidant properties, uterine health (especially in pregnancy), and general anti-inflammatory effects, rather than direct support of the kidneys as understood in Western medicine. Therefore, while there is a traditional basis for its use to "support the kidneys," this does not equate to evidence of benefit for the kidney organ system as defined by modern biomedical science. The evidence rating reflects that the justification is primarily based on tradition, with little to no scientific confirmation for kidney-specific effects.
