Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Loranthus (commonly referred to as mistletoe in some herbal traditions) has been used predominantly in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia and Africa, to support kidney health and treat ailments related to the urinary system. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), certain species of Loranthus (such as Loranthus parasiticus, known as “Sang Ji Sheng”) are believed to tonify the kidneys and liver, strengthen the bones and tendons, and are used for symptoms such as lower back pain, weakness of the knees, and certain types of edema associated with kidney deficiency. The rationale is rooted in the TCM theory of organ systems rather than modern anatomical understanding.

Scientific research focused on Loranthus's effect on kidney function is limited and mainly consists of in vitro or animal studies, which have explored its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. However, these studies do not provide robust clinical evidence in humans to support its efficacy for kidney health. As such, the use of Loranthus for supporting the kidneys is justified mainly by a long history of traditional use rather than by high-quality scientific validation.
