Evidence supporting the use of: Gypenoside
For the body system: Kidneys
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Gypenosides are a group of saponins extracted from the plant Gynostemma pentaphyllum, commonly known as "Jiaogulan" in traditional Chinese medicine. While this herb has been used traditionally for a variety of health purposes, including as a general adaptogen and for cardiovascular support, its direct traditional use for kidney health is less well-documented compared to other organs or systems.
From a scientific perspective, a limited number of preclinical studies suggest that gypenosides may have renoprotective effects. For example, animal models of kidney injury (such as diabetic nephropathy or chemically-induced nephrotoxicity) have shown that gypenosides may reduce markers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in renal tissue. Some studies have reported improvements in kidney function markers (e.g., blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine) and histopathological changes in the kidneys following administration of gypenosides.
However, the majority of this evidence is from cell culture and animal studies, with very limited data in humans. There are no large-scale clinical trials demonstrating clear benefits of gypenosides for kidney health or kidney disease in people. As such, while there is emerging scientific rationale for their potential use to support the kidney system, the evidence remains preliminary and insufficient for firm conclusions or clinical recommendations.
