Evidence supporting the use of: Growth factors
For the body system: Kidneys
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Growth factors, such as erythropoietin (EPO) and other peptide signals, play a well-documented role in the support and treatment of certain kidney-related conditions. In particular, recombinant erythropoietin is a standard treatment for anemia resulting from chronic kidney disease (CKD), as the kidneys are normally responsible for producing EPO to stimulate red blood cell production. Clinical studies and widespread medical practice have validated the use of EPO and similar growth factors for this indication, and regulatory agencies have approved these therapies for use in patients with CKD-related anemia.
Beyond EPO, other growth factors (such as insulin-like growth factor and transforming growth factor-beta) have been explored for their roles in kidney development, repair, and fibrosis. However, the clinical use of these other growth factors in directly supporting or regenerating kidney function remains largely experimental, with most evidence coming from animal studies or early-phase trials. There is ongoing research into whether growth factors can help promote kidney healing after acute injury or slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, but these applications are not yet part of standard care.
In summary, there is strong scientific validation for the use of specific growth factors (especially erythropoietin) in addressing complications of kidney disease, such as anemia. However, broader use of growth factors for direct kidney repair or support is still under investigation, and the evidence for these applications is less robust.
