Borassus aethiopum, commonly known as the African fan palm, has a long history of use in traditional African medicine. In various West African cultures, different parts of the plant—especially the roots and fruits—are employed as remedies for kidney-related complaints, such as urinary tract issues and as a diuretic to promote urine flow. Ethnobotanical surveys conducted in countries like Nigeria, Ghana, and Benin frequently list B. aethiopum among plants used for kidney health and other urinary system problems. However, the bulk of evidence supporting its use for the kidney system comes from these traditional practices and oral histories, rather than from rigorous scientific research.
There is limited scientific validation for these uses. Few laboratory studies have investigated the pharmacological effects of B. aethiopum extracts, and those that exist rarely focus specifically on kidney function or nephroprotection. Instead, they often explore general antioxidant or antimicrobial properties.
