Evidence supporting the use of: Ovate Buchu
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Buchu (Agathosma betulina and related species, including ovate buchu) has a long history of traditional use in South African herbal medicine, particularly among the Khoisan people, for urinary tract ailments, including kidney and bladder infections. The leaves contain volatile oils such as diosphenol, which are thought to contribute to its purported diuretic and antimicrobial properties. Buchu was introduced into European herbal medicine in the 19th century, where it was used as a remedy for various urinary tract disorders. However, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for treating kidney infection (pyelonephritis) is largely anecdotal and based on traditional usage rather than rigorous scientific study.
Modern scientific research on buchu is limited. Some in vitro studies suggest mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, but there is a lack of robust clinical trials evaluating its efficacy or safety in kidney infections. Most herbal references continue to cite its traditional use for urinary tract support, but do not recommend it as a primary or sole treatment for kidney infections, especially given the seriousness of such infections and the need for prompt antibiotic therapy. In summary, while ovate buchu is traditionally used for urinary tract issues, including kidney infections, there is little scientific validation for its effectiveness in this context.
