Seaweed has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asian cultures such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Japanese Kampo. Historically, various types of seaweed, such as kelp and wakame, have been used for their purported anti-inflammatory properties and their mineral content, especially iodine, calcium, magnesium, and other trace elements. These minerals are considered important for general bone health and vitality, which may indirectly support the joints. Folk remedies sometimes suggest consuming seaweed to ease joint discomfort or maintain flexibility, though such uses are largely based on anecdotal evidence rather than rigorous scientific validation.
From a scientific standpoint, some components in seaweed, such as fucoidan (a sulfated polysaccharide found in brown seaweed), have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in laboratory and animal studies. However, direct clinical evidence supporting the use of seaweed or its extracts specifically for improving joint health or treating joint diseases like arthritis in humans is limited and not robust. Most current evidence is preliminary, and more research is needed before strong conclusions can be drawn. Therefore, while the traditional rationale exists, scientific support remains weak and largely indirect.
