Quercetin is a flavonoid commonly found in many fruits and vegetables, and it has been studied for its potential anti-inflammatory properties. The rationale for using quercetin to support joint health primarily comes from its ability to modulate inflammatory pathways, such as inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-1β) and enzymes (e.g., COX-2) associated with joint inflammation and degradation. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that quercetin can reduce markers of inflammation and oxidative stress relevant to joint diseases like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. For example, animal models have demonstrated decreased joint swelling and cartilage destruction after quercetin supplementation.
However, human clinical data are limited. A handful of small randomized controlled trials have explored quercetin supplementation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory joint conditions, showing modest improvements in symptoms such as morning stiffness and pain.
