Noni (Morinda citrifolia) has a long history of use in traditional medicine across Polynesia, Southeast Asia, and other tropical regions. Traditionally, noni has been used to address a variety of ailments, including joint pain and inflammation—often associated with conditions like arthritis. The fruit, leaves, and roots have been prepared in various forms (juices, poultices, and teas) and applied for their purported analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. However, when reviewing the scientific literature, there is little robust clinical evidence supporting noni’s efficacy for joint health in humans. Most scientific studies are preliminary, involving in vitro or animal models, where noni extracts have demonstrated some anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These findings may provide a mechanistic rationale for its traditional use in relieving joint discomfort, but they fall short of confirming effectiveness in humans. No large-scale, well-controlled clinical trials have conclusively established noni as beneficial for joint health. Thus, noni’s use for supporting the joints is rooted mainly in tradition, with only weak scientific backing at this time.
