Krill oil is used to support joint health primarily due to its content of omega-3 fatty acids—especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—as well as astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant. Scientific interest in krill oil’s effects on joints stems from the established anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3s, which have been shown to help reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory joint conditions. Several small clinical studies suggest krill oil supplementation can reduce joint pain and stiffness, particularly in individuals with mild to moderate osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. For example, a 2007 double-blind, randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that 300 mg daily of krill oil significantly reduced C-reactive protein (an inflammation marker) and alleviated symptoms of arthritis after 7 and 14 days compared to placebo.

However, the overall body of evidence remains limited; studies are generally small, short in duration, and sometimes industry-sponsored. While krill oil appears to be effective for some individuals, its benefit does not clearly surpass that of standard fish oil, and more robust, long-term trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and optimal dosage for joint health. Thus, the scientific evidence supporting krill oil’s use for joint support is promising but not yet strong, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5.
