Ecklonia refers to a genus of brown seaweeds, with Ecklonia cava being the most studied species. There is some scientific interest in Ecklonia extracts, primarily due to their content of phlorotannins, which are unique polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Several in vitro and animal studies have suggested that Ecklonia cava extracts may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which are underlying factors in joint degradation and osteoarthritis. Some small human clinical studies, mostly from Korea, have reported improvements in symptoms of osteoarthritis and reduced markers of inflammation with Ecklonia cava extract supplementation. However, most of these studies are preliminary, have small sample sizes, and sometimes lack rigorous controls.

Traditional use of Ecklonia species for joint health is not well documented, and the main rationale for their inclusion in joint health supplements is based on the mechanistic plausibility stemming from their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. To date, there is insufficient large-scale clinical evidence to strongly support their effectiveness for joint health in humans. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and emerging evidence, it remains limited and far from conclusive.
