For the health condition: Jaundice (infants)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Arani (Premna corymbosa), also known as Agnimantha in Ayurveda, is mentioned in traditional Indian medicinal texts as one of the herbs used in various formulations for managing liver disorders, including jaundice. Its use for jaundice, especially in infants, is rooted in folk and Ayurvedic practices, where decoctions or herbal preparations containing Arani are sometimes administered under the supervision of traditional practitioners. The herb is believed to possess hepatoprotective and detoxifying properties according to these traditional systems.
However, there is very limited scientific research specifically validating the efficacy or safety of Arani for treating jaundice in infants. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge, with only a few preclinical studies suggesting some hepatoprotective effects in animal models. There are no well-controlled clinical trials supporting its use in neonatal jaundice, and safety data for infants is lacking. As such, while its use is primarily justified by tradition, modern medical guidelines do not support the use of Arani for infant jaundice due to insufficient scientific evidence and potential safety concerns.
