Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

White Peony (Paeonia lactiflora) is a well-known herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is called "Bai Shao." In TCM, White Peony is commonly used to nourish the blood, regulate menstruation, and calm the liver. Its application in jaundice, particularly in adults, is less direct but is found within classical multi-herb formulas that target liver dysfunctions, of which jaundice is a symptom. Historical texts and TCM practitioners sometimes include White Peony in prescriptions for jaundice when it is associated with "liver qi stagnation" or "blood deficiency," usually in combination with other herbs that directly address dampness and heat (the primary TCM causes of jaundice). However, White Peony is not considered a primary herb for treating jaundice and is rarely used alone for this condition. There is limited modern clinical research specifically investigating White Peony for jaundice in adults, and the majority of evidence is anecdotal, drawn from traditional use and case reports rather than systematic scientific studies. Therefore, the justification for White Peony in supporting or treating jaundice is primarily traditional, with weak direct evidence and mostly indirect support through its role in broader TCM formulations.
