Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Rue (Ruta graveolens) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern herbal practices. Traditionally, rue has been employed for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues, menstrual problems, and as an anti-inflammatory agent. Its use to support or treat jaundice in adults can be traced to some folk traditions, but there is limited documentation or detail in authoritative ethnobotanical sources about its prevalence or efficacy specifically for jaundice. The rationale behind its use generally stems from rue's perceived ability to stimulate bile flow and support liver function, as jaundice is often associated with liver dysfunction and impaired bilirubin metabolism. However, scientific validation for these effects is lacking; studies on rue’s pharmacological activities have focused more on its antispasmodic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, and there is little direct evidence supporting its effectiveness for jaundice. Moreover, rue contains compounds (such as rutin and furanocoumarins) that can be toxic in large amounts and potentially hepatotoxic, which raises concerns about its safety in liver conditions. Overall, while the use of rue for jaundice is rooted in tradition, robust clinical or pharmacological evidence is absent, and its use is not recommended without expert supervision.
