Evidence supporting the use of: Picrorhiza kurroa
For the health condition: Jaundice (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Picrorhiza kurroa, commonly known as Kutki, is a traditional herb extensively used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for liver disorders, including jaundice in adults. Modern scientific research has begun to validate these traditional uses. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated hepatoprotective effects of Picrorhiza kurroa extracts in animal models with induced liver injury. The active constituents, mainly kutkin (a mixture of picroside I and II), show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and bile-stimulating properties that can help reduce liver damage and improve liver function.
A few small clinical trials and observational studies in humans have reported improvement in biochemical markers of liver function (such as bilirubin and transaminases) in patients with viral or toxic hepatitis who were treated with Picrorhiza kurroa extracts. However, these clinical studies are limited in scale and methodological quality, which is why the evidence is rated as moderate (3/5) rather than strong. The World Health Organization and several pharmacopoeias acknowledge its traditional use for liver ailments, and some reviews suggest it may be beneficial as an adjunct therapy for jaundice.
In summary, while there is a strong traditional basis and growing scientific support for the use of Picrorhiza kurroa in jaundice, larger and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety for this condition in adults.
