Hedyotis diffusa (also known as Oldenlandia diffusa or Bai Hua She She Cao) is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to support the treatment of jaundice and other liver-related ailments. Traditional medical texts and herbal compendia such as the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" mention Hedyotis diffusa as an ingredient in various herbal formulas aimed at clearing heat, detoxifying the body, and reducing dampness—concepts in TCM that are often associated with liver dysfunction and jaundice. There is a long history of its use in empirical practice for disorders characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes, which is interpreted as "damp-heat" jaundice in TCM theory. However, while modern pharmacological studies have explored Hedyotis diffusa for its anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and hepatoprotective activities in vitro and in animal models, there is insufficient clinical research specifically validating its efficacy or safety for treating jaundice in adults. Thus, the evidence for its use in this context is mainly traditional, with limited or low-quality scientific data directly supporting its effect on jaundice in humans. More rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm its therapeutic role in this condition.
