Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Calamus rhizome (Acorus calamus), commonly known as sweet flag, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In these traditions, calamus has been employed for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues, respiratory problems, and occasionally for liver disorders such as jaundice. The rationale is often based on its purported ability to "balance humors" or stimulate bile flow, which is conceptually linked to liver health in some traditional frameworks. However, there is little to no direct clinical or pharmacological evidence supporting the effectiveness of calamus rhizome specifically for the treatment or support of jaundice in adults. Most of the available literature, including reviews of herbal medicines for jaundice, either does not mention calamus or cites only anecdotal or folkloric uses without substantiation. Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the safety of calamus due to the presence of β-asarone, a compound found in some varieties that has shown carcinogenic potential in animal studies. In summary, while calamus rhizome has some traditional reputation for addressing jaundice, this use is not supported by modern scientific validation or robust clinical evidence.
