Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

American Liverleaf (Hepatica americana), also known as hepatica, has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly by Native Americans and European settlers in North America. The plant was historically used as a remedy for liver ailments, including jaundice, largely due to the so-called "Doctrine of Signatures," an old belief that a plant’s appearance indicates its healing properties. Hepatica’s lobed leaves were thought to resemble the human liver, which led to its use for treating liver-related conditions. There are various 19th-century and early 20th-century herbal texts and ethnobotanical reports that document its use for jaundice and other hepatic issues. However, these references are based on traditional beliefs and anecdotal evidence rather than on carefully controlled clinical studies. From a scientific standpoint, there is little to no modern research or pharmacological evidence supporting the efficacy of American Liverleaf for jaundice or other liver disorders. No high-quality human trials have evaluated its effects on liver function or bilirubin metabolism. The rating of 1 reflects that while the plant is indeed used traditionally, the supporting evidence is primarily historical and not scientific. Use of hepatica for jaundice today is not recommended due to the absence of safety and efficacy data.
