Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Abutua (commonly referring to species in the Abuta genus, such as Cissampelos pareira or Abuta grandifolia), has been used in some traditional medicine systems, particularly in South America, for the treatment of jaundice and other hepatic conditions. The use of Abutua for jaundice is primarily rooted in folk and ethnobotanical practices rather than modern clinical science. Ethnobotanical surveys and some historical texts document its application by indigenous and local healers, who may prepare decoctions or infusions from the roots or stems to “cleanse” the liver or promote bile flow. However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies—such as randomized controlled trials or pharmacological investigations—that directly validate its efficacy or safety for jaundice in adults. Some laboratory research has investigated related species for general hepatoprotective properties, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to jaundice or to Abutua itself. As such, while there is traditional use, the evidence base is weak (rated 1/5), and caution is warranted due to the absence of well-established pharmacological data and potential toxicity concerns.
