Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mahonia species, particularly Mahonia aquifolium (Oregon grape), have been studied for their potential in treating skin conditions associated with itching, such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. The primary active constituents, such as berberine and other isoquinoline alkaloids, exhibit anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative effects. Several clinical trials and observational studies have investigated topical preparations of Mahonia extract, with some demonstrating modest efficacy in reducing symptoms such as itching, scaling, and erythema in patients with psoriasis. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Cutis (2005) found that Mahonia aquifolium cream significantly improved pruritus (itching) compared to placebo. Another review in the Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy (2006) summarized evidence supporting its use for inflammatory skin diseases. However, the size and quality of studies are limited, and most focus on complex conditions where itching is a symptom rather than on itching alone. Overall, there is some scientific evidence supporting topical Mahonia preparations for relieving skin-related itching, but the evidence is not robust or specific to itching itself, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
