Cicada (specifically, the slough or exuviae of the cicada, known as Cicadae Periostracum or "Chantui") is a traditional remedy documented in the pharmacopeias of Chinese medicine. It has been employed for centuries to address conditions associated with itching, such as skin eruptions (e.g., measles, urticaria), due to its reputed abilities to "dispel wind" and relieve itching. Classical Chinese medical texts ascribe its anti-pruritic effects to these properties, and it is commonly included in multi-herbal formulations for dermatological complaints. However, the scientific evidence supporting cicada’s efficacy for itching is minimal. While some laboratory studies have investigated possible anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory effects of extracts from cicada exuviae, robust clinical data or well-designed animal studies specifically evaluating its anti-itch properties are lacking. Thus, current use is primarily justified by longstanding traditional practice, with limited empirical support. Modern clinical guidelines do not recognize cicada as a standard treatment for pruritus. In summary, while cicada’s use for itching has deep roots in traditional medicine, scientific validation is weak, and its efficacy remains unproven by contemporary research standards.
