Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent commonly used to relieve symptoms of bloating, discomfort, or pain caused by excessive gas in the gastrointestinal tract. Its use for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is primarily traditional rather than strongly supported by scientific evidence. In clinical practice, simethicone is often recommended for patients with IBS who complain of excessive gas and bloating, but the scientific literature on its efficacy for the broader spectrum of IBS symptoms is limited. Some small studies and anecdotal reports suggest that simethicone may help reduce bloating and flatulence in IBS patients, especially when these symptoms are dominant. However, larger, well-designed randomized controlled trials are lacking, and systematic reviews (such as those by the American College of Gastroenterology and Cochrane) generally conclude that evidence supporting simethicone specifically for IBS is weak or inconclusive. Most guidelines do not recommend simethicone as a first-line treatment for IBS, though it may be tried in symptom-targeted therapy for bloating or gas. Therefore, its use is mainly based on tradition and symptomatic relief rather than robust scientific validation.
