Himalayan Rhubarb (Rheum emodi) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known for its laxative, anti-inflammatory, and digestive properties. In these traditions, Himalayan Rhubarb has sometimes been employed to manage digestive complaints, including symptoms reminiscent of what is now called Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)—such as constipation, abdominal discomfort, and bloating. The plant contains anthraquinones, such as emodin and rhein, which are known to have laxative and purgative effects. However, these uses were not specifically targeted at IBS as a defined syndrome, but rather at general symptoms of digestive distress. Current scientific evidence directly investigating Himalayan Rhubarb for the treatment of IBS is lacking. No high-quality clinical trials have evaluated its efficacy or safety specifically for IBS, and its use is not recommended in major clinical guidelines for IBS management. Most modern research on Himalayan Rhubarb focuses on its anthraquinone content and general gastrointestinal effects, rather than IBS-specific outcomes.
