Evidence supporting the use of: White Sage
For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
White Sage (Salvia apiana) has a long history of traditional use among Native American cultures, primarily for ceremonial purposes such as smudging to cleanse spaces and promote spiritual well-being. There is also some anecdotal evidence from traditional herbalism suggesting that White Sage may have relaxing or calming properties, which could be indirectly linked to alleviating symptoms of insomnia or supporting better sleep. However, this use is not as prominent or well-documented in ethnobotanical literature as its ceremonial applications. The traditional use for sleep-related issues is generally based on the broader category of "calming herbs" rather than specific sleep-inducing properties. Scientifically, there is very limited research directly investigating White Sage's effect on insomnia or sleep quality. Most studies on sage and sleep focus on other species, such as Salvia officinalis. While some essential oils from related sage species have shown mild sedative or anxiolytic effects in animal studies, these findings cannot be confidently extrapolated to White Sage in humans. As a result, the justification for using White Sage to treat or support insomnia is primarily rooted in tradition and anecdotal reports rather than strong scientific validation.
