Maca (Lepidium meyenii), a root native to the Andes, has a long history of traditional use as a food and herbal remedy, primarily for enhancing energy, stamina, fertility, and libido. Its use to support or treat insomnia, however, is based more on anecdotal evidence and traditional beliefs rather than robust scientific validation. In Peruvian folk medicine, some practitioners have recommended maca for improving overall vitality and balancing hormones, which in theory could help with sleep disturbances, especially those related to hormonal changes such as menopause. However, references specifically linking maca to insomnia management are sparse in historical texts, and the connection is largely inferential—i.e., maca’s adaptogenic properties might contribute to better sleep quality by reducing stress or balancing mood.
From a scientific perspective, there are very few studies — and no rigorous clinical trials — directly evaluating maca’s effects on sleep or insomnia in humans. A handful of animal studies suggest possible anxiolytic or mood-stabilizing effects, which could offer indirect support, but these findings are preliminary and not widely replicated. Thus, while maca is occasionally used in traditional contexts to support sleep, the evidence is weak, and its reputation for treating insomnia is not firmly rooted in either strong tradition or science.
